CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport)

Structure

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is the world governing body that determines the general rules and regulations under which all motorsport activity should be conducted.  The foremost reason for this is the safety of all participants within the sport; being competitors, officials or spectators.  The FIA delegates this control to specific sporting authorities within national boundaries.  The Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) is the body to which this control has been given for the entire Australian region.  To conduct events under the CAMS banner, a club must be affiliated with them.  The Western Desert Racers (WDR) is one such club, out of around 400 (as of 17 Nov 2006) in Australia.

The following two bodies operate under the CAMS umbrella, and directly influence the rules under which offroad competion is conducted within Western Australia:

Publications

CAMS maintains the NCRs and supplies them in the 'Manual of Motor Sport' you receive with a CAMS license.  During the course of the year there are usually revisions made to these rules, and they are released in the form of bulletins by CAMS.  Some of the bulletins relevant to offroad competition are listed here.  The manual also contains the 'General Requirements' (for both cars and drivers) and a section of regulations specific to each race code (of course we're only talking about the 'Off Road' race code here).

In an effort to keep up with the times (and possibly save a few trees), CAMS now supplies the entire manual online here.  One of the advantages of being online is the ease with which these regulations can be updated.  A short list of offroad specific regulations is here.

Various sub-bodies of CAMS also release information, generally in the form of newsletters, some of which (relevant to offroading) are listed here.  The CAMS website has a complete list of these documents available.

Note that to compete in the Australian Offroad Racing Championship (AORC), the appropriate vehicle number must be registered with CAMS.  This can be done via the following form.
